Captains Log 2011

January 2011
For our boat January is always a little quiet, people are on holiday, however for the trips that have gone out, fishing has been great..out at 45mtr mark, in close under the Harbour bridge/out deep at the Needles and Arid island, Off Port Jackson, in the Colville channel, every where we have been as been super fishing. The water is Blue, we have caught great Albacore Tuna up to 9 kilos, small yellow fin tuna, Hapuka up to 25kilos, bag limits of Snappa and Crayfish. Scallops are full of roe, when you can find them. Kina and Mussels are in Excelent condition. The water Temp is between 21 and 23 cel, we have seen blue marlin now close to Little barrier chasing the plentiful schools of Skipjack, whales orcas are cruising the Shallows picking up large Stingrays and out at the Mokes Mantarays are in close, doing flying leaps out of the water before dusk....they are moving around a bit.

February 2011
Alot of Trips out,the weather has been sunny but windy with easterlies and Northerlies mixed, all weekends were full, the cost of Diesel is a major concern, whats happening up in the middle east is a major concern for the bigger type charter boats, luckily at the present time there are plenty of fish in shore and in close, the Motihue channel and A/B bouys have been fishing very well for us,we have done a few Hapuka trips out past the Barrier and on all occasions were very successful....The Albacore and skip jack Tuna are in abundance, with nice meat ball workups occuring,Sharks in close and out deep are keeping the Takle suppliers in business, lots of gear is being lost to Makos and Hammerheads.

March 2011
This month we are preparing for our Newzealand Textile Fishing Competition, which is used as a vehicle to raise funds for the Sweet Louise Foundation, which DoubleRum is committed to support and organise, this takes lots of time to prepare, but for sure fish are still in Close ,we have caught great fish on the Drift up around Maori rock and in the Middle area..11th March, huge day 160 anglers arrived at the event, after all costs, over 10,000$ was given to Sweet louise, well done sponsors and Team Doublerum, all funds go to ladies, who have secondary cancer.

April 2011
Many fantastic days out, seems that the fish are everywhere, deep, shallow, under the Harbour bridge,in the marina,no matter which boat you go out on fish are being caught, around Rangitoto some tuna, skipjacks are being caught, there are Marlin sightings at Ancorite rock, the water is still warm enough.

May 2011
The weather is turning and the Fish are tending to move out to deeper water, and are Schooling past TiriTiri, big northerly winds are helping to keep the Warm pacific blue water in close. We have had some huge fishing sessions on recent trips out at the 50mtr mark, and around the Colville channel area.In fact in most cases the boat is fully loaded to our limits by high noon, there are still huge gatherings of Kahwai still around with so many Dolphins Schooling them up.Kahwai on the Light Abu Garcia overhead 6kg light rods are fabulous fun, for many fishers this is just true heaven.
