July
2007
During
July Paul Tucker and his son Mark did an extensive internal overhaul
to the Kauri wood panels. We strengthened up the decks and re sanded
the wood. The interior work took a while to do but it now looks sharp
and polished.
The fishing in July has not been easy, some nice catches in the shallows 2 - 4 mtrs in the weed, floating baits near Rangitoto and Motutapu Island.
June 2007 Queens Birthday Weekend- it is unheard of, we caught 50 snapper over 12lb with Hiway Stabilizers in a 2 hour period on the 50mtr line close to 5 Mile Reef plus plenty of 60lb gear completely totaled.5 personal bests were taken on this trip and these guys knew how to fish.
Ben, Alisa, Sandra and Amy on Queens Birthday Monday all caught personal bests. Don't know when the fish will stop biting but they are in perfect condition. Water temp is 17.8 degrees at the 50 meter mark and for this time of the year it is 2 degrees warmer than normal.
So far this is our best season in 5 years. We have tagged and released some big spikys, got some small Tuna ,had plenty of Sharks come up, some big snapper and several very nice sized Kingfish.
Now we start to plan some winter weekends at the Barrier and look for Hapuka and Cray's and that giant elusive 30lb snapper that we still have not landed.
There are plenty of Whales around which makes they days even more special.
May 2007 The boat should be rested as we have maintenance to do. Pulled it out of the water realigned the props and scrapped the bottom and immediately back to 17 knots. Had some trips in late May plus the Matriks Rod competition. 6kg weight line, great competition, well organized, thanks to Rex and Lynette Smith from Serious Fishing.
We are still catching fish, nothing big unfortunately but our average weight is 6.15 kilos per day. Still 60cm snapper coming in. When will the season stop?
April 2007 The weather is settled during the week and many trips are organized for the weekends but unfortunately on the weekends the weather is causing trips to be cancelled. However the trips that are going out are catching many fish .In fact it is a common occurrence to catch 18lb and 20lb snapper at the 50 meter mark. The fishing is incredible. All the boats based at Gulf Harbour have been doing some awesome fishing. Little Barrier ,The Middle Ground, Colville and Port Jackson are on fire. Normally Waiheke should be firing for us at this time of the year but unfortunately it is not working. We have enjoyed our new skipper Bruce working with us.
March 2007 Keep on rolling summer! Double Rum is battered and bruised, we have had some big seas to content with but have caught plenty of fish. We are using Ledger rigs and squid, trying to use the new plastics baits but early indications are they catch fish but not our type fishing. We need 10 rods in the water so a big berly trail and lots of squid still seems to be our secret.
31 January - 01 February Finally now the fish are closer to Gulf Harbour, our port. We are starting to get huge hauls of 45 to 60 cm snapper from 8lb to 16lb. The last 7 trips have been huge successes. Teagan ,Dan and Anthony have been working hard. Jeremy is up north on "Reel Passion" and he and Mark have caught some huge marlin and several large tuna.
January 2007 Back into it for the second part of the season. Early indications are that the water is warming. Around the Hen & Chickens we have picked up big XXL snapper and plenty of medium sized Bonito. Weather is still a bit dicey, mornings are perfect but heavy south westerly make traveling back to Gulf Harbour difficult.
